Brodsky Isaak Izrailevich (1883—1939), Nightly motif, 1915, wood, oil, 21.9 x 35.1 cm, Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky (1883—1939) – Russian/Soviet painter and graphic artist. Brodsky was born in the village of Sofiyevka in Ukraine. He studied at Odessa Art Academy and the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Member of the Union of Russian Artists (from 1910) and the Arkhip Kuinji Society. Brodsky painted portraits and lyric landscapes inspired by the poetic style of symbolism and the art nouveau, such as Grey Day (1909), Portrait with a Daughter painted (1911). Following the socialist realism manner during the Soviet period, he painted large-scale historical-revolutionary pictures, portraits of USSR government and party leaders, which were widely used for replication and propaganda, such as Execution of the 26 Baku Commissars, V. I. Lenin Addressing the Meeting of Putilov Plant’s Workers and V. I. Lenin in Smolny. In 1934 Isaak Brodsky became the director of the All-Russian Academy of Arts.
