In January 1919, Prince Lieven began the formation of the Libau Volunteer Rifle Detachment, which by May, together with the Baltic Landswehr, drove the Bolsheviks out of Riga. After that, the unit went to join the North-Western Army. After arrival, the unit was reorganized into a division. On October 20, 1919, the division reached Ligov. Thus, the division was closest to Petrograd. However, the Reds soon launched a counteroffensive and the Whites were defeated. Already in exile, Prince Liven created the Lievens' Union. Also, a commemorative badge was developed for the union, which was worn in the buttonhole of a civilian suit.
